Cosmetics Clean Out

I don't know about you but the beginning of the New Year always inspires me to do a major clean out of the closet, the kitchen, the office and of course, my makeup drawer.

There are three piles that I create when doing a clean out; keep, toss and not quite sure yet. When it comes to cosmetics, however, it is a bit easier due to the varying shelf life of products.

Rule #1: if you can't remember when you bought it or got it, it is probably a good time to toss it.

Here is a list of life span for your products.

Oil-Free Foundation: 1 year
Cream or Compact Foundation: 18 months
Concealer: 12-18 months
Powder: 2 years
Blush and Bronzer: 2 years
Cream Blush: 12-18 months
Powder Eye shadow: 2 years
Cream Eye shadow: 12-18 months
Eyeliner: 2 years
Liquid eyeliner: 3-6 months
Mascara: 3 months
Lipstick: 2 years
Lip liner: 2 years
Lip gloss: 18-24 months
Nail Color: 1 year

So, ladies open those drawers, makeup bags and vanities and start chucking, even those discontinued colors you've been holding onto since 1983.

Thanks for posting this! I'm a bit mortified to know that mascara is only good for 3 months!

Wonderful. Thanks for the expiration dates cause some of my girlfriends have had make up that are a few years old! Now I'm going to send them this list and get them to throw some nasty things out.

Oo, this is so helpful! I weirdly love cleaning things out, but it's good to know about expiration dates. Helps me know which products I really need to part with.

What about foundation in a pump bottle, where you never touch the inside of the bottle? Good, now I have an excuse to make a Sephora purchase!

I have a ton of hair products and I cleaned them out last week and brought the ones that I hated (after one use and were still full) to work. I then distributed them to my friends to try! What works for me may not work for you! It seemed like a good way to get rid of everything!

Wow, some of these self lives are surprising—thanks for this! I wanted to try to contact you about a new project I'm starting that I thought you'd be great for, but I couldn't find a contact email. Please check out: http://www.sloanemag.com/ And let me know if you are interested in being involved. I think you'd be a great beauty editor.
